History of the Star Spangled Banner

For our last video post on July 4, 2014, we thought we’d get a little serious. A lot of people don’t know the history behind the Star Spangled Banner song and the War of 1812. The War of 1812 is often referred to as the “second war of Independence.” The United States was disenchanted with Great Britain’s failure to honor terms of the first war agreement and the insulting gestures they had made towards the U.S. since then. So the U.S. declared war on Great Britain. It was a war that saw Great Britain march right through to the White House and burn it to the ground along with the Capitol and several other key government buildings. But the U.S. would gain some key victories, including one major one in Baltimore (that looked very bleak for the U.S.), which resulted in the Star Spangled Banner being written.
